Fueled by a desire to uplift aspiring Black entrepreneurs, Dowell has dedicated herself to fostering inclusivity and diversity within Nashville’s startup ecosystem.

One of our ‘Faces of Entrepreneurship’ for the week is Shani Dowell, CEO and founder of Possip, a parent engagement platform striving to create a feedback loop between parents and schools.

“It was amazing, we were able to get technology out, address student needs for work. It was a phenomenal way for us to connect our schools very quickly to our parents and families,” said Scott Langford, Chief Academic Officer for Sumner County Schools.

 With the right tools and tech, schools can remove language barriers, foster meaningful connections and help every student thrive. Possip’s story begins at 7:30.

“Our world moves faster than ever, and schools and organizations need to build bridges within diverse constituencies,” Dowell said. “We are open to additional investment interest, as there is a big growth opportunity ahead.”

“We see the opportunity to take the same idea to other organizations because we think there are so many institutions and organizations where those people at the front line, their voices aren’t fully heard.”

Using the simple texting platform, schools can hear from more parents in one month than in a typical year, Dowell says — and the format invites parents to give the full story behind their answers.

In 2017, the mother and former math teacher launched Possip, an app that prompts parents to text weekly feedback on how schools and teachers are doing.

After competing against eight startups, edtech company Possip took both the $10,000 crowd favorite award and the main prize of $50,000 at the 36|86 Entrepreneur Festival Pitch Competition last week.

Nothing like a cool $60,000 for a two-hour gig to make you happy.

That’s the result for Possip, the entrant from the Nashville Entrepreneur Center that captured the top prize and $50,000 by winning yesterday’s “LaunchTN Pitch Competition” as well as the “Crowd Favorite Award” which came with an additional $10,000 prize.

Possip Founder and CEO Shani Dowell joins us in studio to share her experience growing revenue, raising money and scaling her tech startup in Nashville.

So Shani created Possip, a platform for parents to give weekly feedback in less than a minute. It gives the schools actionable reports and helps them see trends, while allowing parents to track their school’s progress and responses to feedback.

Dowell said she believes that Possip can be a “transformative” technology in those and other schools in which parents have, for whatever reason, under-participated in providing vital feedback on the experience they and their children have in pursuing education.
